General description

CNR participates with two institutes: IRPI (Research Institute for Hydro-Geological Protection) and IDPA (Institute for the Dynamic of Environmental Processes). Both institutes have a consolidated experience on geo-hydrological hazards assessment and risk evaluation. Expertise has been developed in the analysis of natural risks by a multi-disciplinary methodological approach focused on hazard analysis, hazard consequence analysis, risk assessment, and risk management. A new geo-platform has been developed to cope with the aftermath of critical events, exploiting data processing capabilities by GIS, workflow management modules by Decision Support Systems (DSS), and communication systems by Information and Communication Technology.


CNR is WP leader of WP3 and WP4, and will collaborate withCNRS & IGRAC for ESR02and ITC & ERN for ESR-06 and with TUD and AS for ESR-10. Sharing experience gained by stakeholders. Coordinator of pilot study area in Italy.

Key competences and facilities

Methods for the identification and mapping of slope movements; Definition of rainfall threshold for the initiation of landslides; Acquisition and analysis of historical information on geo-hydrological events, and its use for improving vulnerability and risk assessments; Hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment & management; Monitoring and early warning system; GIS and Decision Support Systems in disaster preparedness plans in the field of Civil Protection. Facilities: Aerial-photos and satellite images archive; Geotechnical instrumentation; GIS Labs; On site monitoring stations
