General description

The Institute of Geomatics and Analysis of Risk (IGAR) is part of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment at the University of Lausanne (UNIL). UNIL has 130 research units, 2000 researchers, 500 of whom are professors. IGAR is a young, fast growing Institute created in 2004; there are 2 full professors, 14 PhD students at IGAR and 3 external, 10 technicians in GIS and geological mapping, 4 trainees, 12 master students. IGAR focuses its researches and teaching on hazard and risk analysis based on GIS.

Key competences and facilities

Hazard mapping, software development, Risk and vulnerability analysis. IGAR-Risk group developed innovative approaches dedicated to landslide and flood risks. Basically the researches are focusing on hazard mapping using Hi-Resolution DEM based on field investigations and modeling, and on the risk management throughout different approaches. That is supported by various software developments dedicated to DEM analysis (COLTOP-3D), debris-flows zoning (DF-IGAR: used by the teams from Uni. Milano Biccoca, CNRS- Strasbourg; Uni. Vienna). UNIL collaborates with the private company Palisades in the development of DSS for risk assessment.

Key persons

Prof. Michel Jaboyedoff (hazard modelling, GIS applications, risk management)

Dr. Marc-Henri Derron (remote sensing, geology)

Previous training programs and research

FP7 Safeland project; FP6 MCRTN ’Mountain Risks‘. Project on vulnerability to floods of buildings in collaboration with Swiss federation of cantonal insurances. Two projects on vulnerability and resilience to landslides of communities in Nepal and Guatemala. Applied risk management of potential collapse of a Quarry in Switzerland, and will start in the beginning of 2010 a full risk analysis of highways in Ticino with several Swiss companies. This expertise is currently used to create two different didactical software.
