General description

The main institution of basic and applied geographical research in Romania. It carries out research, documentation and education of Ph.D. students. The research focuses on the relationships between the natural environment and the social and economic framework in connection with global environmental change.

Key competences and facilities

Competencies: Geomorphological mapping, landslide susceptibility, hazard and risk assessment, flash-flood assessment, climate features of the Carpathians and climate change scenarios related to extreme events and their impact on land degradation.

Facilities: Patarlagele Natural Hazards Research Centre, Buzau Subcarpathians (case study area).

Key persons

Prof. Dan Balteanu (geomorphology)

Dr. Mihai Micu (landslide risk assessment)

Previous training programs and research

9 editions (2001-2009) of the International Summer School “Environmental Hazards and Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions”, Patarlagele Natural Hazards Research Centre, Buzau Subcarpathians
